secretary leon panetta disclosed a dramatic turn in the petraeus case. fbi investigators had uncovered what the pentagon called potentially inappropriate communications between the general and jill kelley whom he and his wife got to know in tampa and were revealing between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of documents including e-mails over two years. officials say some were flirtatious, but the general strongly denies an improper relationship. the fbi discovered the e-mails during its investigation of kelley's e-mails, sparked by her complaints about anonymous threats which turned out to be from paula broadwell. they say they found no wrongdoing by general allen but turned the files over to the pentagon which monday ordered its inspector general to investigate. a social link between the two four-star generals, jill kelley who enjoyed socializing with the powerful in tampa while doing volunteer work for military families. she also gave people the impression she had some kind of state department status which officials say she does not. in fact, last weekend, she called police complaining about media

is the woman in tampa who first alerted the fbi that she was getting inappropriate e-mails. that eventually led to the disclosure, officials say, of an affair between david petraeus, the director of cia, and paula broadwell. the author of those e-mails. in getting access to the e-mail accounts of both women, the fbi officials say there were e-mail discovered between general allen and jill kelley. now they've been described as inappropriate although general allen's people say that that is a wild mischaracterization. that he occasionally referred to her as sweetheart but it was affectionate. that they were family friends and there was nothing untoward. there is a second element to all this. the pentagon in disclosing all this this morning that there were 20,000 to 30,000 pages, but again, associates of general allen say that that is printouts that often include multiple copies of the same e-mail. that they did a new printout every time there was a new e-mail in the chain which greatly they say exaggerates the number of e-mails. there is one other element here. general allen was to have a confirma

linked to the scandal. as fox's ainsley earhart reports, the fbi is busy with multiple investigations. >> reporter: fbi agents searching the home of paula broadwell, the woman whose affair with general david petraeus led to his resignation as the cia director. the agents went to her house in charlotte, north carolina on monday night. some of the general's former staff members and friends reportedly shocked that this woman was sending e-mails warning jill kelley to stay away from him. now, john allen is under investigation. defense secretary leon pan eight said he ordered an investigation of general allen on monday. the secretary who is a former cia director also talking about general petraeus' resignation. he says, quote, i think he took the right step and i think it is important when you are director of the cia with all the challenges that fess you in that position that personal integrity comes first and foremost. general petraeus was scheduled to testify about the benghazi attacks. >> it is not a coincidence to me. he is the one who probably knows most about what happened or didn't

't compromise national security. the context is a little clearer... about the f-b-i agent who helped start the investigation that led to petraeus' downfall. there were reports frederick humphries sent a photo of himself without a shirt on... to several people, including a woman named jill kelley, back in 2010. well, this appears to be the photo... it shows him after a "swat" practice, posing between two shirtless and bald dummies with the caption: "which one's fred?" jill kelley went to humphries and told him she was receiving harassing emails from an anonymous person. that person turned out to be paula broadwell. jill kelley sent several emails to her mayor in tampa florida... complaining she was receiving threats. she wrote them in the early hours of tuesday and wednesday. she said her three children are scared, and her husband can't return home from work because there's so much media blocking the driveway. she also stated the truth will one day prevail in this scandal. kelly recently called the police and asked for diplomatic protection... citing her role as honorary consul to south
with broadwell came to light during an fbi investigation that began last summer. today, attorney general eric holder defended the bureau's decision not to alert president obama and congressional leaders. >> we made the determination as we were going through the matter that there was not a threat to national security. had we made the determination that a threat to national security existed, we would of course have made that known to the president and also to the appropriate members on the hill. >> holman: that investigation also has led to a pentagon probe of the top u.s. commander in afghanistan-- marine general john allen. he's under scrutiny for extensive communications with a tampa, florida woman. allen has denied wrongdoing. defense secretary leon panetta said today no other senior military officials appear to be involved. he spoke during a trip to thailand. >> i'm not aware of any others that could be involved in this issue at the present time. obviously as this matter continues to be investigated both on capitol hill and by the inspector general, i'm sure we'll have to wait and see what
